Chapter Nineteen

From the top-floor offices of an abandoned machinist shop three buildings away Marisol watched the news cameras descend. It had taken her two nights of surveillance to determine which building The Bishop was using. She’d spent the previous two days sleeping on this garbage-strewn, dirty floor with the rats. Today she’d woken up to the sound of her plans shattering around her ears.

It had been a good plan. A simple plan. When the Suburban had pulled into the warehouse’s bay doors in the early hours of the morning, Marisol had checked her supplies. They were the bare necessities. Her Colt, three spare clips, and a boot knife. She’d never needed more than that. Most jobs required far less. When she was sure she had everything within arm’s reach, she’d curled her knees to her chest and closed her eyes. She’d planned to rise with the moon and bury The Bishop with the dawn.

Then Brin had arrived with her puppy.

Her town car arrived around noon, an hour after the news crews and two hours after her security detail. Marisol recognized the two state cops. She’d spent a good amount of time confirming their loyalty when they were assigned to Brin’s protection. Her research had told her they were innocent idiots. The woman with them was the new addition.

She had the unmistakable look of one who bought her suits on a government salary. Dominique could confirm that Brin had replaced Marisol with a woman who fit better with the Girl Scout image. A woman who could do everything Marisol did, but in the light of day, openly and legitimately. She was too afraid of the answer to ask the obvious question.

Marisol watched her move from building to building, surveying the area. Little did the agent know Brin’s biggest threat was only a few feet away, skulking in his dirty hole the same way Marisol skulked in hers. When the woman approached the warehouse in question, Marisol’s whole body tensed. The Bishop wouldn’t be stupid enough to attack Brin’s security detail in broad daylight, but it seemed as if he hadn’t snagged a new victim in a week. Maybe he was desperate. It occurred to Marisol for the first time that this may have been his plan all along. Lure Brin back within his grasp.

If it was a trap, Marisol had to stay. She had to break in. She had to end him once and for all. Brin would never be safe until she did.

Risking the noise and the ping on the closest cell tower, Marisol put a call through to Dominique. It rang once before picking up and Dominique didn’t bother with a greeting.

“What do you think brings our governor here?”

“I thought you’d be able to tell me that.”

The probing statement had the effect she’d expected. Dominique hesitated for a few seconds and then said, “Sabrina’s on the same track we are.”

“Not just her,” Marisol said, watching the woman in the cheap suit.

“There may be another party involved,” Dominique hedged.

“How involved?”
